European Job Market

Employment in Sweden

Economy

Sweden has a highly developed, export-oriented economy and is known for strong industries in engineering, manufacturing, life sciences, digital services and green technology. The country combines a competitive business environment with a high standard of living, modern infrastructure and a well-educated workforce. Stockholm is an important centre for technology and innovation, while Gothenburg and Malmö also play significant roles in industry, logistics and international business.

Demography

Sweden has a population of over 10 million people. A substantial share of the population has an international background, and the country has for decades attracted workers, students and families from abroad. Most employment opportunities are concentrated in the larger urban regions, especially Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö, although demand for skilled labour also exists in smaller cities and regional growth areas.

Migration

Sweden has long relied on international recruitment in order to strengthen its labour market and support economic growth. For highly qualified professionals from outside the EU, the country offers both standard work permits and the EU Blue Card route. Sweden updated its EU Blue Card rules from 1 January 2025, and the Swedish Migration Agency states that an EU Blue Card in Sweden gives the right to live and work in Sweden for the employer and profession covered by the application.

Employment

Sweden's labour market is modern and skills-focused, but it is also experiencing structural challenges. Official labour-market information highlights shortages in occupational groups such as health professionals, building and related trades workers and health associate professionals. At the same time, job seekers are expected to be proactive, and digital job search is the standard approach. For employers, access to qualified international talent remains important, especially in sectors where domestic shortages persist.

Working in Sweden

Sweden is attractive for professionals who value innovation, workplace stability and a high quality of life. The Swedish Migration Agency notes that employers can initiate EU Blue Card applications, and that the Blue Card is available for highly qualified work meeting the relevant salary and qualification rules. For many international professionals, Sweden offers a strong combination of career opportunities, English-friendly workplaces and access to the wider European market.
